At LMU Goldens, the health and well-being of our dogs and puppies is our top priority. That’s why we proudly feed Valu-Pak Free 28/20 (Black Bag) a high-quality, nutrient-rich formula trusted by breeders and dog owners alike.
Valu-Pak, manufactured by Specialty Feeds, has never had a single product recall in over 40 years of business. That’s right, zero recalls.
This outstanding record speaks to their commitment to strict manufacturing standards, consistent ingredient sourcing, and quality control. As a breeder, having peace of mind about what goes into my dogs' food is absolutely essential, and Valu-Pak has earned our trust.
Valu-Pak Free 28/20 (Black Bag) is specially formulated for active dogs and growing puppies. Here's what makes it a great choice for our Golden Retrievers:
28% Protein / 20% Fat – Perfect for healthy growth and sustained energy
Primary Proteins: Chicken by-product meal and pork meal
Grain-Free: No corn, wheat, soy, or gluten
Natural Preservatives: Chicken fat preserved with mixed tocopherols (Vitamin E source)
Fortified With: Omega-3 & 6 fatty acids, glucosamine, chondroitin, vitamins, and minerals
Made in the USA by a family-owned company
We include about 4 pounds of Valu-Pak Free 28/20 in each puppy’s going-home bag to help you transition smoothly from our home to yours.
While Valu-Pak Free 28/20 is an excellent choice for many dogs, it's important to note that it may not be suitable for all Golden Retrievers.
This formula includes both chicken and pork as primary protein sources. Some Goldens are sensitive or allergic to these proteins, particularly chicken. If your puppy shows signs such as:
Itchy skin or ears
Chronic ear infections
Soft stools or diarrhea
Excessive paw licking or chewing
…it may be worth discussing dietary protein sensitivity with your veterinarian. If necessary, alternatives such as salmon, lamb, beef, or limited-ingredient diets may be recommended.
At LMU Goldens, we are always happy to help guide you through diet transitions and offer suggestions tailored to your puppy’s individual needs.
Start Slow: Transition over 7–10 days when switching from your previous food
Fresh Water: Always ensure plenty of clean, cool water is available
Watch Body Condition: Puppies may need more food than adults by weight, adjust portions accordingly
Monitor Health: Coat quality, stool consistency, and energy levels are excellent indicators of how well your dog is doing on this food
We chose Valu-Pak Free 28/20 because it delivers consistent results, healthy skin and coats, strong energy levels, and firm stools. It’s also readily available locally at Conway Feed and Garden or can be purchased online (though often at a higher cost).
